An Interview With Dr. Amanjee, A Qualified Dentist In Rocklin

What are dental sealants?

Sealants are dental materials that protect the grooves and pitted surfaces of the teeth especially the chewing surfaces of the molars. Most cavities in children are found on these surfaces.

What types of teeth are suitable for sealants?

The molars are most suitable for sealants. The natural flow of saliva keep the smooth surfaces of the teeth clean but does not wash out the grooves and fissures. The teeth more at risk for decay are the primary molars and the six year and twelve year old permanent molars. These teeth are most in need of sealants. Many times premoalrs also benefit from sealant coverage.

Will sealants replace fluoride for cavity protection?

No. Sealants protect the chewing surfaces of teeth to prevent cavities. Fluorides prevent cavities on smooth surfaces of the teeth as well. Flouride ions adhere to the tooth surfaces to prevent tooth decay

How are sealants applied?

The application of sealant is quick and comfortable. It takes only a single visit. The tooth is first cleaned. It is then dried and conditioned. The sealant is then flowed into the grooves of the tooth and allowed to harden with a special curing light. Your child will be able to eat right after the appointment.

How long will sealants last?

Sealants can last a long time, many years if properly taken care of. If your child has a good oral hygiene, avoids biting on hard objects, avoids chewing on ice, then the sealants can last a long time. Grinding of teeth or bruxism tend to wear the sealants.

Will sealants make teeth feel different?

The sealants might feel strange for a day or two. But the children feel fine after that.

Are sealants visible?

No. They are clear or tooth color shaded plastic materials which are not visible.

Why is sealing a tooth better than waiting for decay and filling the cavity?

Sealing of teeth with dental sealants shallow out the depth of the grooves and fissures of molars. The molars are designed to have grooves and fissures which enables effective chewing of the food to aid in digestion. When grooves are deep, food tends to get enlodged in the deep grooves and do not get washed off efficiently with rinsing or inadaquete brushing. Sealants cover those deep areas on the molars so food does not get enlodged on the tooth surfaces causing tooth decay.Once the tooth has a decayed surface, filling the cavity is inevitable. Sealants are the best non invasive, preventive options available to prevent tooth decay.

How do sealants fit into a preventive dentistry program?

Sealant application is only one step of a comprehensive plan in preventive dentistry. Brushing, flossing, balanced nutrition, limited snacking, and regular dental visits are very essential to a bright and healthy smile.
